Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is an effective solution for patients experiencing dental anxiety. Patients who feel nervous or scared about their visits can relax knowing that Dr. Blatt and associates reduce discomfort to help create a positive experience.

What is it?

“Sedation dentistry” refers to administering sedatives to patients prior to a dental procedure. Contrary to popular belief, most sedatives allow the patient to remain conscious during treatment. Patients experience a feeling of gently induced relaxation.

There are many advantages to being sedated for dental work, primarily remaining comfortable during a procedure. Sedation may also be used for children to relax them and it allows the dentist to perform the necessary treatments safely and efficiently.

There are a variety of methods to accomplish the required degree of sedation. Our team evaluates our patients thoroughly to make sure they choose a method that meets their individual needs.

We offer a variety of options to make sure we sedate our patients properly:

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative delivered through a face mask throughout the entire procedure. This gaseous substance elevates the mood, relieves anxiety, and reduces pain. There are associated minor side effects, such as tingling and numbness. Nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas, has been successfully used for many years and the effects can be reduced when the patient is introduced to oxygen.

General anesthesia is an induced loss of consciousness. Patients go into a deep sleep. This is accomplished using a combination of intravenous drugs and inhaled gasses. It is delivered by a qualified anesthesiologist.
